PerformrSCRIPT vs Final Draft: Which Fits a Writer Who Wants to See It Staged?

By the PerformrSCRIPT Team · Reviewed September 28, 2026

Final Draft is the program most film and television writers already know. If your script is headed for a stage, a classroom, or a first rehearsal, the question is what happens after the last page.

Both programs format scripts properly, track revisions in color, and read and write Final Draft files. PerformrSCRIPT adds classroom tools and a direct path from a finished script into a production, and it is free while the beta runs.

For playwrights, students, and theatre companies writing their own work, PerformrSCRIPT is our recommended choice. For a writer who needs a desktop app that works offline, Final Draft is the stronger fit today.

Write for the Stage in a Format Built for It

A stage play is not a screenplay with the camera directions removed. Character names, stage directions, and lyrics each sit differently on the page.

PerformrSCRIPT has stage play and musical formats alongside short film, monologue, sketch, and scene, and each line is typed as what it is. Press Enter and the next line takes the type that usually follows. Press Tab to change it. See how the editor works.

Final Draft also offers stage play and musical templates, including a Dramatists Guild musical layout. Both programs take theatre seriously on the page. The difference is what they do with the script once it is written.

Track Every Revision the Way a Production Expects

Once a script goes into rehearsal, page numbers and scene numbers have to hold still while the writing keeps moving.

PerformrSCRIPT locks a draft as the baseline, then marks changed lines, freezes page and scene numbers with A pages, and colors each round of changes through nine revision colors, white through cherry.

Final Draft does this too, and it is the reason many writers learned revisions on it. On revisions, the two are close.

Teach a Writing Class in the Same Place Students Write

A playwriting class needs more than a formatting program. It needs a way to hand out an assignment and get the pages back.

PerformrSCRIPT runs classes with a join code, assignments with due dates, student submissions, and notes from the teacher on the submitted draft. See the classroom tools.

Final Draft offers student pricing and educator pricing through its sales team. Classroom assignment tools are not listed on its site.

Send the Finished Script Into Rehearsal

For a company producing its own play, the script is the first document of the production, not the last.

PerformrSCRIPT tags props, costumes, and other elements as you write, prints sides and a production report, and sends the script to PerformrSTAGE, where characters become the cast list and scene headings become scenes. Sending needs a PerformrSTAGE account.

Final Draft lists scene, cast, and location reports. Breakdowns and scheduling are not listed on its site.

Where Final Draft Is Ahead

Final Draft runs on Mac and Windows and works without an internet connection, and it has an iPhone and iPad app. PerformrSCRIPT runs in a web browser only, with no phone app or offline writing yet.

If you write on a plane or need a desktop program, that matters, and Final Draft is built for it.
