PerformrSCRIPT vs WriterDuet: Which Fits Writing for the Stage?
By the PerformrSCRIPT Team · Reviewed September 28, 2026
WriterDuet was built for two writers in one script. If your script is headed for a classroom or a stage, the tools around the writing matter as much as the writing.
Both run in a web browser, format stage plays, track revisions in color, and read and write Final Draft files. PerformrSCRIPT adds classroom tools and sends a finished script into a production, and it is free while the beta runs.
For playwrights, students, and theatre companies, PerformrSCRIPT is our recommended choice. For two writers who want to type in the same script at the same moment, WriterDuet is the stronger fit today.

Write for the Stage, Then Take It Into Rehearsal
Both programs write stage plays and musicals. WriterDuet’s stage play template has a Lyrics line type, and PerformrSCRIPT has a musical format with lyric lines.
PerformrSCRIPT also has short film, monologue, sketch, and scene formats, and each line is typed as what it is. Press Enter and the next line takes the type that usually follows. See how the editor works.
On the page, the two are close. The difference is what happens around the page: the classroom, and the production that follows.
Teach a Writing Class in the Same Place Students Write
A teacher needs to hand out an assignment, collect the drafts, and write back.
PerformrSCRIPT runs classes with a join code, assignments with due dates, student submissions, and teacher notes on the submitted draft. See the classroom tools.
WriterDuet gives students and educators 50% off a subscription. Classroom assignment tools are not listed on its site.
Send the Finished Script Into Rehearsal
A company producing its own play needs the cast list, the scenes, and the prop list the moment the script is done.
PerformrSCRIPT tags elements as you write, prints sides and a production report, and sends the script to PerformrSTAGE, where characters become the cast and scene headings become scenes. Sending needs a PerformrSTAGE account.
WriterDuet lists a tagger and reports. Scheduling is not listed on its site.
Where WriterDuet Is Ahead
WriterDuet lets two writers type in the same script at the same moment, with text and video chat, and it writes offline and on iPhone, iPad, and Android.
PerformrSCRIPT gives each writer a role and merges each save line by line, flagging any line two writers both changed. It runs in a web browser only, with no phone app or offline writing yet.
